ABOUT HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is fast becoming a more recognized and accepted form of therapy with GP’s, dentists and hospitals referring more and more of their patients to hypnotherapy practises.  It is also quickly becoming more fashionable as celebrities turn to hypnotherapy for weight loss and stage fright with outstanding results.

Hypnosis comes from the Greek word for sleep “hypnos”, though the state of hypnosis is very dissimilar from sleep itself.  It is a technique that has been used for a very long time and has been traced back to the ancient Greeks, Babylonians and Egyptians.

hypnosis was developed in the 18th century for use during surgery and then became used by doctors for painless dentistry and amputations.  It became more widespread after World War 1 helping service personnel with traumatic mental problems.  In 1950's both the British and American associations announced their support for hypnosis as a useful form of therapy and now it is used by people from all walks of life to overcome issues in their life, from phobias and smoking to skin conditions and irrational fears.

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis and most people naturally think of stage shows where members of the audience are hypnotised into doing outrageous things.  Hypnosis for stage is very different to hypnosis for therapy and it is important to know that at all times you are fully aware of everything around you, in full control and the hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything that you do not wish to do.

When you are hypnotised you go into a trance like state.  Remember the car journey that you forgot?  You drove from a to b seemingly on autopilot, don’t actually remember but would snap out of it if anything untoward happened.  This is a good description of how it feels.  You are actually in a deep state of relaxation whereby the conscious mind becomes quiet, allowing your powerful sub-conscious mind to come to the front.  The sub-conscious mind is then re-programmed according to your desires to make permanent changes in your life.

The feeling of being hypnotised is a wonderfully relaxing experience, you are aware of everything and because it feels so pleasant you allow the sub-conscious mind to float free and you can come back to full awareness at any time you choose feeling wonderfully refreshed.  In most cases people do not feel like they’ve been hypnotised because of the pre-conceptions they have.
